The
Oregon Pacific Chapter of the American Red Cross offers a number of youth programs
and classes designed to meet the needs of children of all ages. Grade school children learn safety skills
through out “Super Safety”, “Whale’s Tales”, and “Ready 123/ALERT” courses. Middle school students can participate in “Basic
Aid Training” and “Babysitter Training” where they learn proper First Aid techniques and lifesaving childcare skills.High School students may join the First Aid Service Team (FAST) , where
they provide first aid and CPR at more than 50 community events per year.
BAT is a
six hour class designed for children in grades 3-5.Children will learn emergency response skills
and rescue breathing, as well as ways to prevent and care for choking, wounds,
nosebleeds, falls and animal bites.This
course includes reponses for fire safety, poisoning, water accidents, substance
abuse and more. The cost of this class is $20.00.
Ready 123/ALERT
Ready
123/ALERT is a 1.5 hour safety education program for children. It prepares
children for home disasters such as fires, earthquakes, winter storms and being
home alone. It also teaches handling peer pressure and constructive use of
leisure time. The class is designed for children ages 6-10. The cost of this
class is $15.00.
Super Safety & Whales Tales
Super
Safety is an education program for elementary school-aged children that teaches
personal safety skills and emergency preparedness.Children prepare for being home alone,
handling emergency phone calls and phone safety, how to answer the door, fire
safety, handling peer pressure and constructive use of leisure time.Whale Tales is used to teach children about
safe behavior in and around water.Whale
Tales uses an activity-based format to make water safety fun and easy to learn.
Cost of this class is $10.00.
Babysitter's Training
This newly
revised course gives 11- to 15-year-olds the skills and confidence to be great
babysitters, plus real-world experiences to help them develop leadership and
communication abilities.It's fun and
fast-paced with hands-on activities, exciting video, role-plays and lively
discussions.Participants learn to care
for children and infants, be a good leader and role model, make good decisions,
solve problems and stay safe, and handle emergencies such as illnesses,
injuries and household accidents.Cost
of this class will be $40.00.
Babysitter's
Training is offered regularly at the Red Cross headquarters and district
offices. It is also offered regularly at the following community centers (Cost
